MÖ is the perfect decorative element for people with a modern and dynamic lifestyle.
Inspired by the Möbius strip, it's more than just a centerpiece; it's a sculptural piece that becomes a conversation starter, designed to be discovered through the senses.
At first glance, it's an understated object whose forms stand out in any space without being visually intrusive, creating intrigue and inviting an understanding of its shape. To the touch, the texture of its veins intertwines with the subtly fluid changes of the surface, leading to the discovery of a second piece with an "asymmetrical symmetry" that varies in its surface patterns.
Ultimately, a timeless piece that can be not only a centerpiece but also the subject of future conversations.
Exploration
It began by understanding the surface through replicating it in sketches, which provided the necessary material to start making iterations that would allow us to arrive at more defined and functional forms.
Manufacturing
Board
Due to the varying surface characteristics from all angles, the best way to manufacture MÖ is using a 5-axis CNC machine. This ensures optimal material utilization and eliminates deviations, guaranteeing the piece's reproducibility.
The process begins with a solid block of cherry wood, carefully selected for its grain and color, which is mounted on the CNC machine for roughing. The tool carves the shape in a single pass, leaving a small portion at the base to serve as a support until the final volume is achieved. The support is then removed and hand-polished with a gouge and sandpaper. The piece is sealed with a clear varnish that highlights the grain and protects the wood from everyday use.
The strip of the German mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius becomes the object of study for this project because it is an intriguing and sculptural form by nature; a single surface that makes it a non-orientable object.
