In the chronicle of “El Carnero”-1638, Juan Rodriguez Freyle mention for the first time a ceremony in Guatavita Lagoon, where used to take place an offering to the goddess Chie to pray for the prosperity of the community.
According to Freyre, in this ceremony, the chief stood in the middle of a raft surrounded by four priests and countless riches. Covered with gold and emeralds, he was pushed to the center of the lagoon, where he threw all the goods in. This act would mean that the new leader had been initiated, giving the title of Zipa (governor).
The tale of “the golden man” covered with mystery and rumors was heard by the Spaniards in Quito, that moved by the greed searched for the golden kingdom. A land where even the buildings where covered in gold.
